La Fontanilla

  • (Palos de la Frontera)
La Fontanilla was the public well in Palos where according to tradition the ships Santa María, Pinta and Niña took on water before, on 3 August 1492, they set sail from the port of Palos, captained by Christopher Columbus and the Pinzón brothers, heading for the Indies. It was built over an ancient wellhead from the Roman period and protected by a shrine built of brick in the 13th century in the Mudejar style.
