Saltés archaeological site

  • Paraje Natural Marismas Del Odiel - Huelva (Huelva)
The southernmost island right in the heart of the biosphere and nature reserve of Marismas del Odiel is Saltés, a place replete with history, myths and legends. This was where the Romans erected a temple to Hercules and in 1012 the Arabs founded the independent fiefdom of Shaltish. The Islamic town of Shaltish still shows many remains of its last phase of occupation, which is to say the period around the end of the 12th century and beginning of the 13th. The fort from this Almohad period itself takes up an area of 3,500 square metres and constitutes one of the principal focuses of the conurbation as well as adjoining the mediaeval port. Superficial surveys carried out at various points on the island show that the remains of habitation and sometimes of solid construction are spread over almost all the usable space, but excavations have taken place only at the highest topographical part of the site.
