Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora del Rocío
Calle La Ermita, 1 - Almonte (El Rocío)
Sanctuary and village of El Rocío. The village is known throughout the world as a place of pilgrimage to the sea, and is located in unsurpassed natural surroundings within the confines of the Doñana national park. The current sanctuary of the Virgen del Rocío has not been the only one, and there is a history dating back to the time of Alfonso X, when the first shrine was built on seigniorial hunting grounds traversed by much-used tracks, which might explain the readiness with which devotion to the Virgen del Rocío spread. One of Andalusia's most deeply rooted popular manifestations are the romerías (pilgrimages), with social, tourism, artistic and religious implications, and specifically El Rocío.
